WRITE partecipates in the 24th Biennial Conference of the European Association for Chinese Studies (EACS)

On August 24 – 27, 2022 WRITE research team will partecipate in the 24th Biennial Conference of the European Association for Chinese Studies (EACS) held at the Department of Asian Studies, Palacký University, Olomouc (Czech Republic). The panel entitled “New Forms of Calligraphy in Contemporary China” is composed of three interventions: (1) “New forms of calligraphy in China from ‘abstract’ painting to graffiti art” presented by the Principal Investigator Adriana Iezzi. The intervention will give an overview of these new forms of calligraphy and outlines their main characteristics, proposing a media-based classification into four categories (“fine and contemporary arts”, applied and decorative arts, performing arts, and graffiti art). (2) “Graffiti in Shanghai and Chengdu: looking for Chinese writing, symbols and calligraphy along the street” presented by WRITE PhD students Marta Bisceglia and Martina Merenda. After a brief introduction about the birth and the development of graffiti in China, the intervention will show the graffiti art scene in Shanghai and Chengdu, presenting the most important crews/writers of those cities. (3) “Knowledge representation of new forms of calligraphy: the WRITE digital archive”, presented by WRITE Research Fellow Valentina Pasqual, who will illustrate how WRITE digital archive stores heterogeneous artworks from the four WRITE collections (“fine and contemporary arts”, decorative and applied arts, performing arts, and graffiti art).
